Cashmere Care

Cashmere Care Guide

How often should I wash a cashmere sweater? (how frequently to launder cashmere) 🔗
Wear your new cashmere sweater two to three times before washing or dry-cleaning. Regular, gentle cleaning helps fibers settle, keeps colors vibrant, and reduces pilling. With proper care, your Billie Todd knit becomes softer and more beautiful over time.
Safest way to wash cashmere at home (hand wash or machine wash on delicate) 🔗
Hand-wash in cold water with a wool-safe detergent or use your washing machine’s delicate cycle at the lowest temperature. Always turn the garment inside out to protect its surface. After rinsing, roll it gently in a towel to remove moisture, then reshape and lay flat to dry. For detailed instructions, see our Cashmere Care Guide.
Can you put cashmere in the dryer? (drying cashmere safely) 🔗
No — cashmere should never be put in the dryer. Heat and tumbling damage the natural fibers, leading to shrinkage and loss of softness. Always dry flat, away from direct sunlight or radiators, to maintain the drape and fit of your women’s and men’s sweaters.
Why does cashmere pill and how do I reduce it? 🔗
Yes, light pilling is normal with new cashmere. Pilling occurs when shorter fibers rise to the surface with friction from wear. Because Billie Todd uses long-fiber yarn from Todd & Duncan, our sweaters pill less and settle quickly. After a few washes, the fibers stabilize, and gentle de-pilling restores a smooth finish.
What makes Billie Todd cashmere more durable? (Todd & Duncan yarn benefits) 🔗
Our durability comes from the source. By using Todd & Duncan yarn spun from long, strong fibers and having every garment knitted in Hawick, we ensure sweaters that resist breakage, maintain shape, and stand the test of time.
Why is cashmere rare? (how many goats for one sweater) 🔗
Cashmere is one of the world’s rarest fibers. Each cashmere goat produces just 150 grams of usable cashmere per year. It takes fleece from four adult goats to make one 100% cashmere sweater. This scarcity, along with centuries of Scottish craftsmanship, is why authentic Scottish cashmere knitwear is synonymous with exclusivity and luxury.
