A Yarn That's Born Ready
Cashmere comes from the soft undercoat that cashmere goats grow each winter and shed each spring — a single goat yields only a few ounces a year, which is a large part of why the fiber costs what it does. Ounce for ounce, it insulates more effectively than wool, which is why a cashmere sweater can be warm without the weight or the scratch.
From this raw, Grade A fiber, our partner Todd & Duncan spins the yarn in Kinross, Scotland, using the naturally soft water of Loch Leven — a step that's been part of their process for more than 150 years.
We use 15.5-micron fiber at a 35mm staple length: long, fine strands that hold up better than the shorter fibers used in lower grades. No cashmere is entirely pill-proof — a little surface fiber will always work loose in the first few wears, the same way a new pair of jeans sheds dye — but it settles down after that, and the combination of long-staple fiber and a well-spun yarn is what keeps a sweater looking new years longer than a cheaper one. Proper care helps too: hand wash cold or dry clean, and let it dry flat.

Craftsmanship that knows no short-cuts
Nobody knows cashmere like the Scottish do. Billie Todd products are made in Scotland using traditional methods by people who take pride in their work.
Our factory in Hawick, Scotland has been making fine cashmere garments for over two centuries. Many of those garments are still being worn today. These craftspeople use time-tested machines and techniques to ensure a smooth, clean fit that can withstand the pulling and stretching of everyday life without losing shape.
Individual pieces of a garment are linked together by hand, ensuring the seams are durable and straight -- no puckering or pulling. Once knitted, each garment is washed and finished in the soft water of the River Teviot, which runs through Hawick — the same water Scottish knitters have relied on for generations to give cashmere its lasting handle.
We combine this classic construction with modern touches like saddle-stitched shoulders to add definition, full-fashioned stitching for increased strength, a flattering fit that’s tailored without being stuffy, and a rich color palette that will never look dated.
