The mill

Spun beside Loch Leven since 1867.

Todd & Duncan has been spinning cashmere in Kinross for over 150 years, and its yarn is the quiet common thread in much of the best Scottish knitwear. We buy it for the reasons everyone does: a dense, even yarn that softens with wear instead of thinning.

Our garments are then knitted and finished in Hawick, the Borders town that has made cashmere knitwear for generations. We design in New England and sell direct, so the price reflects the sweater rather than the layers between the mill and you.

What Todd & Duncan cashmere means

From Loch Leven to your shoulders

Todd & Duncan cashmere is yarn, not a label. It tells you who spun the fibre; the sweater still depends on who knits it, and how. Here is ours, step by step.

Questions, briefly

What is Todd & Duncan cashmere?

Cashmere yarn spun by Todd & Duncan, a Scottish spinner in Kinross founded in 1867. Knitwear makers buy the yarn and knit it into sweaters, so “Todd & Duncan cashmere” describes the yarn inside a garment.

Is Billie Todd cashmere made from Todd & Duncan yarn?

Yes. Our cashmere sweaters use Grade A, 15.5-micron Todd & Duncan cashmere yarn, spun in Kinross, Scotland, and are knitted in Hawick.

Is Billie Todd connected to Todd & Duncan?

Only as a customer. The shared “Todd” is a happy coincidence: Billie Todd is an independent brand that buys the mill’s yarn.

Will I pay import duties?

Not on U.S. orders. Everything ships from Boston with free ground shipping, so the price you see is the price you pay, plus any local sales tax.

Which Todd & Duncan cashmere sweater should I start with?

The 2-ply, 12-gauge Earnest is the year-round crewneck that layers under a jacket. For more warmth, the 4-ply Fraser and Finlay; for the heaviest, the 6-ply Ewan or the 8-ply Bruce cardigan.

Is Todd & Duncan cashmere better than Italian cashmere?

Different rather than better. Scottish-spun cashmere tends to feel denser and fuller and softens with wear; Italian yarns are often finished for an immediate, silkier hand. Our Scottish vs Italian Cashmere guide goes deeper.

How do Todd & Duncan sweaters fit?

Each style is cut differently. Every product page has a fit note, a size chart and what our models wear. See the sizing guide.
