The Finlay 4-Ply Cashmere Ribbed Crewneck
The fisherman's rib, brought ashore.
Fisherman's rib takes its name from the working sweaters of Britain's fishing towns, where it earned its place by knitting up thick, springy and warm. The Finlay keeps the stitch and leaves the nets behind: 100% Todd & Duncan Grade A cashmere, spun in Kinross and knitted in Hawick, Scotland.
The rib runs the length of the body and down each sleeve, giving it a clean vertical line. At 8 gauge and 4-ply it has real body and a natural stretch, so it moves with you rather than against you. A ribbed crewneck and cuffs finish it.
Construction
- 100% Grade A cashmere
- 4-ply (two ends of 2-ply yarn), 8 gauge
- Todd & Duncan yarn, spun in Kinross, Scotland
- Fiber: approximately 15.5 microns / 35 mm staple
- Knitted in Hawick, Scotland
- Fisherman's rib through the body and sleeves
- Ribbed crewneck, cuffs and hem
Why Fisherman's Rib Matters
A plain rib alternates knit and purl. Fisherman's rib adds a tucked stitch on every row, and each tuck draws in extra yarn. The fabric comes out thicker, softer and more cushioned than a plain knit of the same ply and gauge. It stretches across the body and springs back, which is why it holds its shape so well.
In cashmere, that loft is the point: more air held in the fabric means more warmth without more weight. Learn more about how ply and gauge shape a finished sweater, or see the Gregor for the same idea in a cable knit.
Fit
Classic through the body, with the rib giving a close but comfortable drape. It is equally at ease on its own or under a chore coat or overcoat. Our men's knitwear runs generous, so if you are between sizes, take the smaller.
As Worn
Damian (pictured) is 5'10" and wears a size Small. He wears a 40R jacket, with a 15½" collar and 32" sleeve.
Best For
Autumn outdoors: coastal walks, the drive up north and the pint that follows. Classic colors suit it well; brighter shades give it a little more to say.
